EMPTYING THE NOGGIN – Jazz win 3 in a row and 5 of 7 with comeback v. Kings

Emptying the Noggin
• What is it about Sacramento – last year it was Jimmer missing the three at ESA and then at then Arco or Power Balance or whatever it is called Cousins hit a shot and Hayward misses the shot and Jefferson’s tip in is too late. Tonight is Gordon Hayward with the game winner from the top of the key on a catch and shoot from Jamaal Tinsley and he buried it.

• This is big time growth from Gordon because he was having a tough night shooting the ball and instead of going into the tank or shying away from the big shots he believed in himself and he made the huge shot of the night.

• We talked about it on the broadcast and I tweeted it earlier but Evans is a career 34% in the clutch and Cousins is a career 29% in the clutch. Tonight Cousins checked in with 4:56 left and the Kings up by 10, he proceeded to go 0 for 2 with a turnover and 2 silly fouls in the final 5 minutes as the Jazz outscored the Kings 17 to 5 with him in the game. Evans went 0 for 2 in the final 3:06 he was in the game.

• Marvin Williams defense on Evans and Derrick Favors defense on Demarcus Cousins were the keys to winning this game.

• Thorton hit a three with 6:08 left to make it 97-85. From that point on the Jazz held the Kings to 1 for 9 with 3 turnovers, as I was typing this on the plane Tyrone came by and told me the Jazz got stops on 12 of the final 14 possessions.

• Big free throws by Favors with 4:28 left and by Hayward with 3:57 then by Marvin with 2:33 left and Tinsley with 2:11 left and Jefferson capped it off with 2 FT with :58 left. That is 10 for 10 in the final 4:28

• 17 offensive rebounds tonight – Favors leading the way with 9

• Jazz defense has been terrific all year but tonight they couldn’t get any stops until the end

• Jamaal Tinsley was +18, Favors +14 and Hayward +12 tonight

• Randy Foye and Paul Millsap each played just 19 minutes tonight

• Favors used the left hand very well around the rim tonight. He still finished shooting just 7 of 16 but he had a sick line 16 pts, 14 rebs, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

• On the final play for the Kigns Aaron Brooks went one on one and Jamaal Tinsley ripped the ball away with a steal. As Ron Boone pointed out on the broadcast super smart play by Tinsley to not dribble allowing for the Jazz to inbound in the front court. This set up the final play for Hayward

• Jazz have to play better than this. It is nice to get a win but the Jazz need to find a way to play better defensively and have more continuity on offense. They are not running their routes or cutting as well as they need to on offense and thus are stagnant. The offensive rebounding is bailing them out. Defensively, they have been very good but tonight they took a serious step backwards. Some of it is what the Kings do but the Jazz need to be better

• Tyrone Corbin keeps telling me this league is about momentum. The Jazz have won three in a row and 5 of 7 this could be the start of a little run.
